Reserva Conchal Golf, Costa Rica
This is one of ours favorite courses in Costa Rica and recently was listed in Conde Nast’s top 4 golf resorts in the world and recently a PGA event. The service is excellent and the staff is very well trained, courteous and goes out of their way for you to have a great round of golf.
Reserva Conchal golf course is a Robert Trent Jones Jr design that has a mix of easy and tough holes. What makes this course special is the mix of rainforest and ocean scenery. My favorite hole is the 17th hole – mammoth 210 yards par 3 whose elevated tee box offers a spectacular view of Conchal beach and the mountains in the back. That’s the only ‘nice’ thing about it – you need to hit a 200 yard windblown shot over water if you are playing the back tees.
My nemesis is the 10 hole. This dogleg par 4 looks easy but I always end up in the left OB – even though I teed off with an iron! Then you are left with a long iron to a green that is guarded by a deep bunker on the left, water on the left, out of bounds on the left – guess where I hit it, the left.
Hacienda Pinilla Golf, Costa Rica
Hacienda Pinilla is Costa Rica’s little secret golf gem. It really doesn’t get the publicity that Four Seasons, Marriott Los Suenos or Reserva Conchal get but believe me, it is a great golf course inside the Hacienda Pinilla resort, this golf course offers wide fairways, long par 4s and probably Costa Rica’s most famous par 3 – the 15th.
I like Hacienda Pinilla because you can play at your own pace. A round at Pinilla is very relaxing and you can truly enjoy the scenery – dry rainforest.
One of the favorite holes is the par 4 ninth hole. You have to decide between layup or trying to shoot over the fairway bunkers. If you lay up, you will have a very long iron shot to the elevated green that is protected by bunkers and a severe slope that helps the ball roll towards the OB. I like this hole because even though it looks easy, all of a sudden you are putting for a double bogey.
Los Suenos Golf, Costa Rica
Just an hour from San Jose and 10 minutes from Jaco, you will find the Marriott Los Suenos resort – home of the La Iguana golf course.
About the course: The La Iguana golf course at Marriott Los Suenos is one of my favorite courses in Costa Rica. It has a nice mix of short and long holes, wide fairways and sneaky hard par 3s. The most attractive thing about the course is the location – the rainforest. You literally see monkeys, macaws, and other exotic animals. You also get to hit approach shots with the rainforest as the background. The colors are so vivid that I find myself stopping several times a round to absorb the scenery.
The Los Suenos Resort is the premier resort in the mid-Pacific portion of Costa Rica due to its great fishing, beautiful hotel and golf course..
Ocean Course @ Peninsula Papagayo

The Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo, what you have heard is correct! It is one of “Best 100 Courses Outside the United States” by Golf Digest and in the top 20 most scenic golf courses in the world according to Travel and Leisure, this Arnold Palmer course is a golfers paradise. There are only 5 courses in the world with more ocean views!

The Four Seasons golf course is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. We recommend arranging your rounds to this course as far ahead as possible – not because there are too many players, but because they have a limited amount of tee times per day. Our favorite hole is the 6th hole par 4 with a huge drop; and, awesome view of the Pacific ocean. Play this course to enjoy seeing howler monkeys and plentiful flora.

On the Pacific side, offshore islands defined by their underwater pinnacles, such as Cocos Island and the Bat and Catalina Islands in Guanacaste, offer up enticing shark and manta ray encounters. These destinations boast heavy currents, making them more suitable for advanced divers. These are the most famous dive sites in Costa Rica and worth the effort to reach.
The Pacific coastline is also known for pelagic life. From humpback whales to manta rays, this coast is suitable to all diving levels with some calm areas and some known to have a bit of current. Remember that the southern area of the country is a protected biological reserve. The underwater landscape is made up of boulders and pinnacles, and you’ll enjoy large schools of fish swimming by on almost every dive.

Seeing things from a different perspective adds to the fun of adventures, tours and activities in Costa Rica – canopy suspension bridges, zip-lines, scuba diving, rafting, para-sailing – all give a different view and I assure you that the view from the inside of a waterfall is different than the view from the outside.
Much like zip-lines there are a wide variety of different ways to descend a river ranging from wild and extreme to relatively mild. Like the zip-lines the advertising focuses on the -est aspects. Highest, biggest, and wettest are all invoked to entice travelers but when it comes right down to it they are all a blast.
“La Roca” canyoneering
Besides the waterfall rappelling the tour includes a fun zip-line section over the river so it a great way to get a taste of what zip-lining is like to help decide whether to do it 15-20 more times on a full blown canopy tour (we usually get a bit bored after the first six or eight and start looking around for a waterfall to slide down…).

Ever wondered what it is a monkey finds so fascinating about the forest canopy? Costa Rica is a pioneer in canopy exploration, where thick branches serve as platforms for the adventurous traveler, more than 100 feet above the jungle floor. If you’re wondering why you’d want to head to the top of a tree just to look around, remember that 90% of Costa Rica animals and 50% of plant species in rainforests live in the upper levels of the trees. When you explore that far off the ground, the view is something you’ll never forget! A Costa Rica zip line tour, hanging bridges hike, or aerial tram tour are all fantastic ways to take advantage of Costa Rica’s stunning forest canopy views.
Almost anyone of any age and physical condition can enjoy a Costa Rica zip line adventure as it is not strenuous. Secured into a harness and attached to a sturdy cable, you will have the opportunity to fly through the rainforest canopy and experience a bird’s eye view of the lively forest below. A Costa Rica zip line is about a five hour adventure that operates rain or shine all year and is led by bilingual guides. For the non-adrenaline junkie, the aerial tram can take you through the rainforest in comfort and safety. Prefer to linger? Hanging bridges offer panoramic views for acres, and an experienced guide will be happy to point out a variety of birds and animals.
